Persian cat grooming: mats, eyes and how often
A Persian cat needs a professional groom ideally every 15 days, with daily combing at home. The fine coat mats first behind the ears, under the legs and on the belly. Left too long, it mats down to the skin and has to be clipped.
- Coat
- Long and fine, with a dense undercoat
- Mats first
- Behind the ears, armpits, belly
- Professional groom
- Ideally every 15 days
Why a Persian coat mats
A long, fine top coat sits over a dense undercoat. Loose hair stays trapped instead of falling out. In Mumbai's humidity it clumps faster, and the clumps tighten into mats.
What to do between grooms
A few minutes a day stops most mats forming.
- Comb down to the skin with a wide-toothed metal comb, then a fine one
- Check behind the ears, the armpits and the belly every day
- Wipe around the eyes gently with a soft, damp cloth
- If the comb catches on a tight mat, stop and bring your cat to us
What a Persian groom involves
We work at the cat's pace, with breaks. You can watch the whole groom on the screen in our waiting area.
- Mats taken down gently, never dragged out
- A bath, then careful drying down to the skin
- The undercoat combed out
- Hygiene trim, nails and paws
- Gentle cleaning around the eyes
Care for a flat face
Persians are flat-faced, so heat and stress affect their breathing more. We watch the breathing closely, take breaks, and stop if it changes. We take extra care with tethering and handling. Tears can stain the fur under the eyes, so we clean there gently at every groom.
Asked about the Persian cat.
How often should I get my Persian groomed?
Ideally every 15 days at a salon. Daily combing at home in between stops the coat from matting.
Will you shave my Persian?
Only if the coat is matted to the skin, and only after we explain why. A short clip is then kinder than hours of pulling at the mats.
Why does my Persian's face get stained?
Persians often have watery eyes because of their flat faces, and the tears stain the fur. Gentle daily wiping keeps it clean. See a vet if the eyes look red or sore.
