Cocker Spaniel grooming: ears, feathering and the right cut
An English Cocker Spaniel needs a professional groom ideally every 15 days. Its silky feathering on the ears, chest, belly and legs tangles and picks up dirt on walks. The long ears hold damp, so we check them at every groom.

Why feathering tangles
Long, silky hair rubs against itself and the ground all day. On walks it picks up dirt, burrs and damp. That is where tangles start.
What to do between grooms
Ten minutes every day or two works better than a long session once a week.
- Comb the ears, chest, belly and legs down to the skin with a metal comb
- Check the feathering after walks for burrs and damp
- Dry the ears and feathering fully after a bath or rain
- If the comb catches on a tight mat, stop and bring your dog to us

Care for the ears
Cocker ears hang close to the head and trap moisture, more so in the monsoon. We check them at every groom and clean the outer ear. An ear that smells, looks red or is sore needs a vet.

The long, silky hair there rubs against the ears and collar all day. Combing that spot daily stops most mats.
Can I get my Cocker Spaniel's feathering cut short?
Yes. A shorter trim is easier to keep clean in the monsoon. We will suggest a length that suits the coat and how you live.
