Beagle grooming: shedding, ears and how often
A Beagle needs no haircut, but its short coat sheds all year and more when the season changes. A professional groom ideally every 15 days, with weekly brushing at home, keeps the loose hair down. The long ears need a look every week.
- Coat
- Short and dense, with an undercoat
- Sheds
- All year, more when the season changes
- Professional groom
- Ideally every 15 days
Why a Beagle sheds so much
A dense undercoat sits under a short, harder top coat. The loose undercoat comes out all year, and most of all when the weather turns.
What to do between grooms
A few minutes a week takes out much of the loose hair.
- Brush in the direction the hair grows, with a rubber curry brush or a grooming glove
- Brush more often when the coat is coming out in handfuls
- Bath only when the coat needs it. Too many baths dry the skin
- Look at the ears each week for a smell, redness or heavy wax
What a Beagle groom involves
A Beagle groom is a de-shedding groom, with no haircut. You can watch the whole groom on the screen in our waiting area.
- A bath with a shampoo chosen for the coat and skin
- Careful drying, with the loose undercoat lifted out as we go
- A thorough brush-out
- Nails and paws
- Ears checked and cleaned
- We tell you what we found on the skin and coat
Care for the long ears
Beagle ears fold over and hold moisture and wax, more so in Mumbai's monsoon. We check them at every groom and clean the outer ear. An ear that smells, looks red or is sore needs a vet.
Asked about the Beagle.
Why does my Beagle shed so much?
Beagles have a double coat that sheds all year, and more when the season changes. Brushing at home and regular de-shedding grooms take out the loose hair.
Should I shave my Beagle to stop the shedding?
No. Shaving does not stop shedding, and the coat protects the skin from sun and heat. A de-shedding groom takes out the loose hair instead.
How do I clean my Beagle's ears?
Check them once a week and wipe only the outer ear with a dry cloth. Look for smell, redness or heavy wax. If an ear looks sore, see a vet.
